Vespasian sadly past away at 72 AD when he was making the Colosseum. His son Titus countinued making the Colosseum. The old name of the Colosseum was Amphitheatrum Flavium (Flavian Amphitheatre). If
you were unlucky you would stand because there wouldn’t be enough seats. The
arena was 83 meters by 48 meters. The Colosseum was made out of concrete
faced with stone. Admission was free. To protect spectators from the sun, the seating area of
the Colosseum as well as part of the arena were screened by an
awning. The Colosseum today is a major tourist attraction in Rome with thousands of
tourists each year paying to view the colosseum. Part of the arena has been re-floored.
The floor was made of wood. There was sand on the floor so the blood could
easiely be taken away.They were divided into three levels; the
level that was closest to the arena floor was reserved for the senators and the
emperor. The Patricians or rich citizens also sat here. The majority of people
sat in the second level. These people were called Plebeians or the middle
class. Most of these men were farmers. The last level was at the
top of the amphitheatre, and furthest from the arena floor, the slaves and the
women stood up here.
